Our standards
We only stock brands that meet our strict standards. Each product is individually reviewed and must meet at least one of the following:
Australia’s
non-toxic standards
Made In Alignment follows the regulatory, scientific and consumer safety legislation in Australia.
While there isn’t one single legal definition of ‘non-toxic’, our criteria includes compliance with relevant national standards, avoidance of known harmful substances and evidence of safety for intended use.
Compliance with regulatory authorities
- Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)
- The Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS)
- Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ)
- Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC)
Free from harmful or banned ingredients
We will not stock products that contain:
- Parabens
- Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (e.g. DMDM hydantoin)
- SLS/SLES (Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate)
- PEGs and petrochemicals
- Synthetic fragrances (unless explicitly listed and assessed for safety)
- Heavy metals
- BPA and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals
- Toxic solvents (e.g. toluene, benzene)
- Phthalates
Low hazard ratings
Many non-toxic brands use these third-party tools to evaluate ingredient safety:
- EWG's Skin Deep®
- Think Dirty App
- INCI Decoder
Dermatological and safety testing
- Proven to be non-irritating, non-sensitising and safe for human skin, consumption and use.
- Patch testing or clinical safety trials
Environmentally safe (optional but popular)
- Biodegradable
- Reef-safe
- Free from microplastics
- Non-toxic to aquatic life
Just because a product is labeled ‘non-toxic’ doesn’t guarantee it is. In Australia, the ACCC can penalise companies for misleading or unsubstantiated ‘clean’ claims. Brands are expected to back up all marketing claims with evidence and comply with the Australian Consumer Law.
